Body Art

Permits are required for body artists (tattooists and body piercers) and body art studios.

Applies to Tattooists and Body Piercers

Required Documents: 
Required documents must be submitted no later than 30 days prior to the intended date of operation.

  • Completed paper renewal application with signatures of the applicant and the studio owner of a permitted facility or filled out online through the Schenectady County Citizen Engagement Portal. 
  • Blood Borne Pathogens Course Certificate – in class or online course – yearly
  • CPR/First Aid Course Certificates, including Skills Session– every 2 years
  • Proof of Workers' Compensation Insurance (submit one from the list):
    • Form C-105.2
    • Form U-26.3
    • Form SI-12
    • Form GSI-105.2
  • Proof of Disability Insurance (submit one from the list):
    • Form DB-120.1
    • Form DB-155

If you do not maintain Workers Compensation Insurance and/or Disability Insurance Coverage, submit CE-200 Attestation of Exemption Certificate, signed and dated.     • In color, white background

    • No snapshots, mobile phone photos, or photo alterations of any kind
    • No shadows
      OR
    • Two copies of a driver's license photo taken within 3 years
  • Permit Fee $185

Applies to Tattooists and Body Piercers

The Schenectady County Sanitary Code Body Art Tattoo/Body Piercing Regulations effective October 12, 2021, allows body art practitioners to obtain a temporary permit to perform tattooing and body piercing within Schenectady County at one event lasting 14 days or less.

Required Documents: 
Required documents must be submitted no later than 30 days prior to the intended date of operation.

  • Completed paper application with signatures of the applicant and the event organizer or filled out online through the Schenectady County Citizen Engagement Portal.
  • Blood Borne Pathogens Course Certificate – in class or online course 
  • CPR/First Aid Course Certificates – in class 
  • Skin Course Certificate – Save Each Life – Class held in Massachusetts
  • Listing of experience
    • Permanent place of employment including studio name and address, studio owner's name and phone number
    • Number of years as an artist or body art permit or license issued under the jurisdiction of another political subdivision, state, or nation.
  • Proof of Workers' Compensation Insurance (submit one from the list):
    • Form C-105.2
    • Form U-26.3
    • Form SI-12
    • Form GSI-105.2
  • Proof of Disability Insurance (submit one from the list):
    • Form DB-120.1
    • Form DB-155

  • If your operation includes food service and you are making renovations in the kitchen, including adding, removing, or changing equipment, you must go through the Food Service Plan Review Process.
  • If you operation includes a swimming pool, spa, or beach, additional required permit documents can be found online. Click for more information.

Food Establishment Permits are not transferable between owners. Any time a change of ownership occurs, even if there is just a change of the name of the corporation or LLC, the new owners must obtain a new permit to operate. The Legal operator must match the one printed on the permit.

  • A signed, dated letter stating your intent to take over the food service establishment “making no structural changes, including adding, removing, or changing out equipment.” Include the establishment’s former name, new name, address, and new owner’s signature

You need a permit if you are preparing, handling, or serving food for the public. A Temporary Food Service is any operation where food is prepared and served to the public at a single event or celebration. A temporary food permit is meant for events with lower-risk foods that require minimal preparation or storage.   Learn More

  • Floor plan of mobile unit
    • All plans must be drawn to scale (minimum ¼ inch = 1 ft.)
    • Location of prefabricated and custom-built equipment
    • Include title block
  • Specification list of food service equipment
    • All equipment must be NSF approved or equivalent (commercial type equipment)
  • Finish schedule- listing materials used to finish the floor, base, walls, and ceiling
  • Ventilation schedule- listing method of ventilation
  • Plumbing schedule- listing or showing the location of hot and cold-water lines, vented drain lines, sewage lines, the source of the water supply, and the method of sewage disposal
  • Description of operation:
    • Estimated number of meals per day
    • Approximate number of employees
    • Menu
    • Method of garbage storage and disposal
    • Method of insect and rodent control
  • Enough hot and cold food storage based on menu items
  • Storage for toxic chemicals and vehicle maintenance items that is separate from food items
  • Garbage containers separate from food storage
  • Equipment and surfaces must be smooth and easily cleanable
  • A 3 bay sink for ‘wash, rinse, and sanitize’ cleaning method
  • Handwash sink with hot and cold water, soap, and paper towels
  • Food prep sink with indirect drain if foods are not washed at the commissary
  • Drying area for clean equipment and utensils
  • A 40-gallon gravity fed fresh-water storage tank
  • A wastewater tank that is 15% larger than the fresh-water storage tank (46 gallons if fresh-water tank is 40 gallons)
  • Sanitary method of discharging wastewater tank to approved sanitary sewer
  • Sufficient ventilation
  • Permitted commissary to store the mobile unit and use for food preparation, food storage, and equipment cleaning, sanitizing, and drying

Required Plan Review documents

  • Completed Plan Review Fee Schedule, signed, and dated or Plan Review Application filled out online through the Schenectady County Citizen Engagement Portal.
  • Appropriate fee as listed in the Plan Review Fee Schedule.
  • A completed Chlorination System application or Ultraviolet System Application.
  • Site plan of the property (showing well, septic, building location, and property lines).
  • Septic System details
  • Well log (available from well driller)
  • Well pump test data (available from PE)

  • Schematic of water system and proposed treatment
  • Manufacturer’s specifications of proposed equipment
