Schenectady County Promotes Pedestrian Safety Amid Spring Season

As the weather warms and more residents take to the streets, Schenectady County is prioritizing pedestrian safety. With an increased number of people out and about, it's crucial for both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings.

"Pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility, and as our communities become more active in the spring season, it's essential for drivers to remain attentive and watch out for pedestrians and work zone crews,” said County Legislator Pete Frisoni, Vice-Chair of the Public Safety Committee. "By staying alert and following safety guidelines, we can work together to prevent accidents and create safer streets for everyone.”

To promote pedestrian safety, Schenectady County is offering the following tips for drivers:

Stay Alert: Pay attention to your surroundings and be on the lookout for pedestrians, especially at crosswalks, intersections, and school zones.

Adhere to Speed Limits: Adhere to posted speed limits, particularly in areas with high pedestrian activity.

Avoid Distractions: Avoid distractions such as texting, talking on the phone, or adjusting the radio while driving, as these activities can divert your attention from the road.

Yield to Pedestrians: Always yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in crosswalks and at intersections, even if there are no traffic signals or signs.

Use Caution in Work Zones: Exercise caution and reduce speed when approaching work zones and be mindful of workers and pedestrians in the area.

Additionally, pedestrians are reminded to practice safety measures such as using designated crosswalks, following traffic signals, and making eye contact with drivers before crossing the street.
