Ambassadors Celebrating 15th Anniversary, to be Honored in Holiday Parade

The Schenectady County Legislature has announced that the Schenectady Downtown Ambassadors will serve as the Grand Marshal at this year’s Annual Holiday Parade, which will step off on Saturday, November 23, 2024 in downtown Schenectady.

"The Downtown Ambassadors have been chosen as this year’s Grand Marshal because they truly embody the spirit of community and service,” said Gary Hughes, Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature. “For 15 years, they’ve been the friendly faces that make downtown Schenectady feel welcoming to residents and visitors alike. It’s an honor to celebrate their dedication and the positive impact they’ve had on our city."

Established in 2009, the City’s Mission’s Ambassador Program is celebrating 15 years of service, transforming lives, and building a sense of community. Over 100 men and women have extended hospitality to visitors in Downtown Schenectady, creating a welcoming atmosphere and used their skills to navigate challenging situations. Through this experience, they've gained valuable workforce training and development. Many Ambassadors have advanced to new employment opportunities, continuing to make a positive impact on themselves, their families, and our community.

“We are so excited to receive this honor,” said Mike Saccocio, Executive Director of the City Mission. “For the Ambassadors it means that their work is not only noticed, but appreciated and celebrated. It sure is a great community when individuals can go from being homeless to being Grand Marshals of the Holiday Parade.”

“MVP Health Care is a long-time supporter of the Downtown Schenectady Ambassador program. We are keenly aware of the vital support services and programs they offer to the local community and we are so proud to honor them as this year's Grand Marshal for the 55th Annual Holiday Parade,” said Augusta Martin, MVP Health Care's Vice President of Care Management and Provider and Community Engagement. “We are thrilled to once again partner with the city and county of Schenectady and thank them for bringing the Capital Region together this holiday season to celebrate each other and our vibrant community.”

“The Holiday Parade is a hallmark event in Schenectady, bringing together residents and visitors to usher in the holiday season each year,” said Mayor Gary R. McCarthy. “I encourage everyone to come Downtown, enjoy the festivities, and support our local small businesses during your visit. We’re grateful to the City Mission for their Downtown Ambassadors program, which has not only transformed the lives of so many of its participants, but has also created a welcoming and friendly environment for all who visit Downtown Schenectady. Their designation as Grand Marshals for this year’s parade is well-deserved.”

This year we are embracing the traditional spirit of the holiday season by making the essence of the event – a “holiday parade” – to be our theme. This allows the community to express their creativity and highlight what the holiday season means to them.

The event is scheduled to step off at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2024, in downtown Schenectady. The Holiday Parade is produced under the leadership of the City and County of Schenectady, and in partnership with the Downtown Schenectady Improvement Corporation, The Capital Region Chamber, and Discover Schenectady.

"The holiday season will be here before you know it, and we’re already gearing up for this year’s parade,” said Schenectady County Legislator Cathy Gatta, Chair of the Tourism, Arts & Special Events Committee. “If your group or organization wants to be part of the festivities, sign up today. It’s the participation of our community, both in the parade and cheering along the route, that truly makes this event special. Stay tuned for more exciting announcements about what’s in store this year!"

Applications are open and available for groups to participate and create a float for the parade at www.schenectadycountyny.gov/parade. Entrance fees are $100, or $75 for non-profit organizations. Applications and fees must be submitted or postmarked no later than October 23, 2024. Online payments options are available.
